Veneto, land of marvels
The Venetians are a tenacious and tireless people, known for their industriousness and numerous innovative ideas. Veneto, officially the Region of Veneto, is an ordinary-statute region located in northeastern Italy, with a population of 4,858,092 inhabitants. Its historical capital and administrative center is the city of Venice.
It is the fifth most populated region in Italy and the sixth most visited in Europe, as well as the most visited in Italy, according to Eurostat data. In 2023, it recorded 21.1 million arrivals. The region is named after the Veneti, an Indo-European people who settled in the territory after the mid-2nd millennium BC.
Veneto extends from the Dolomites to the Adriatic Sea. Venice, the capital, is famous for its canals, Gothic architecture, and carnival. From the 15th to the 18th century, the Veneto region was under the control of the Venetian Republic, then it passed to France, to Austria and later to Italy in 1866.
Near Lake Garda, a lake that extends up to the Alps, lies Verona, the medieval city where Shakespeare set “Romeo and Juliet.”
